The particle orientation is not as perfectly uniform as a metallic foil's continuous metal film, which is why metallic ink appears somewhat less brilliant and mirror-like than foil -- the particles' random orientation creates some diffuse reflection alongside the specular reflection. The result is a metallic appearance that reads as metallic in context but has a slightly warmer, more diffuse quality than the crisp mirror-like reflection of foil.

Metallic Ink Advantages Over Foil

Metallic ink offers meaningful advantages over foil stamping for specific applications. Large-area metallic coverage is significantly more economical with metallic ink than with foil stamping, which requires expensive foil roll material for full coverage. Complex gradient and vignette effects -- metallic fading into standard color, or metallic areas with complex tonal variation -- are achievable with metallic ink through standard printing techniques but impossible with foil stamping's binary on-off application. And metallic ink is applied in the same printing pass as other inks, eliminating the separate press pass and tooling that foil stamping requires.
