Thermochromic ink contains microcapsules filled with temperature-sensitive dye compounds that change from colored to colorless (or from one color to another) at a specific activation temperature -- typically between 15 and 65 degrees Celsius depending on the ink formulation. When the ink is above its activation temperature, it is colorless; below the activation temperature, it is fully colored. This color change is reversible -- the ink returns to its original colored state as it cools below the activation temperature.

The Thermochromic Mechanism

Thermochromic inks use leuco dye systems -- three-component chemistry consisting of the colorforming compound (leuco dye), a color developer, and a solvent. At low temperatures, all three components are in close proximity and the leuco dye is activated to produce its color. At the activation temperature, the solvent melts and the components separate, deactivating the leuco dye to produce the colorless state.
