Window patching applies a clear plastic film -- typically PET or PVC in 50-100 micron thickness -- over die-cut openings in packaging panels, creating transparent window areas that allow consumers to see the actual product inside the packaging before purchase. The film is applied to the box interior surface with food-safe adhesive, covering the die-cut opening and providing a transparent barrier that maintains product protection while enabling visual product evaluation.

Window Film Materials

Standard window patching film is clear PET (polyethylene terephthalate) -- optically clear, dimensionally stable, and food-safe for indirect food contact applications. Anti-fog PET is available for refrigerated food applications where temperature transitions cause condensation on standard PET film surfaces, obscuring the product view at the moment of consumer evaluation. Frosted PET creates a semi-transparent window effect for brands wanting partial product visibility without full transparency. For compostable packaging programs, NatureFlex (regenerated cellulose film) is ASTM D6400 certified compostable and maintains compostability certification for the overall package.

Window Position and Shape Design

Window placement is the most important window packaging design decision -- the window must be positioned to display the product's most visually compelling attribute at the correct angle. A window that shows the product face-on (as a consumer would use it) communicates the most relevant product information. A window that shows the product from an unexpected angle may be visually interesting but less commercially effective. Window shape -- rectangular, oval, circular, arched, or custom die-cut -- creates additional brand differentiation opportunities beyond standard rectangular window formats.
