FDA Medical Device Labeling Requirements

Medical devices require labeling that complies with FDA 21 CFR Part 801, which mandates: the device's established name and trade name, intended use statement, directions for use adequate for safe and effective use by laypersons, manufacturer name and address, lot number, and for in vitro diagnostic devices, the expiration date and storage requirements. Device packaging cannot make claims that are not supported by the device's FDA clearance or approval.

UDI (Unique Device Identifier) Labeling

The FDA's Unique Device Identification (UDI) system requires most medical devices to bear a UDI on their label and in an FDA database. The UDI consists of a Device Identifier (DI) that identifies the labeler and device, and a Production Identifier (PI) that provides lot/batch number, serial number, and expiration date. UDI must appear on device packaging in both human-readable text and AIDC (automatic identification and data capture) format such as a linear barcode or 2D datamatrix barcode.
